World Gin Day – let the celebrations be-gin!
It’s world gin day on Saturday, June 8 but let’s face it, no one needs an excuse to enjoy this wonderful spirit – and the Scottish capital offers some perfect serves for gin-themed celebrations.
Here’s six good reasons for gin lovers to toast Edinburgh, at any time of the year. Hand’s up who’s thirsty?
Make your own gin
The Edinburgh Gin Distillery welcomes guests from all over the world to discover more about Edinburgh’s historic gin heritage, and explore its atmospheric working distillery.
This boutique 5-Star distillery offers visitors the chance to discover how the award-winning gin is made and it’s open 7 days a week.
Its gin making experience involves a tour of the distillery, a tutored tasting session, and the chance to make a bottle of your own one-off custom gin.
Using miniature copper stills and the head distiller’s range of aromatics and botanicals, create your own bespoke gin recipe to take home at the end of the three hour session
Be warned though, advance booking is essential, as tours are often booked up several months in advance.
Gin o’clock at Harvey Nics
Relax in style sipping on a gin-based cocktail in one of the city’s most fashionable destinations. The Harvey Nichols’ Forth Floor bar hosts cocktail masterclasses on various dates in the summer. Covering everything from martinis to British classics. The bar, with its amazing picture window, offers incredible views of the north of Edinburgh, Forth Estuary and Kingdom of Fife.
Drink the spirit served from a gin tap
You can do just that at the home of Pickering’s Gin. Visit its Summerhall Distillery for a gin jolly, see how the spirit is made, tour the botanicals room, stills and bottling area and be served a drink straight from the gin tap of the bar next door, the Royal Dick – the distillery occupies the site of what was once part of the University Royal (Dick) Veterinary School, affectionately known as the Dick Vet.
Don’t forget to browse round the shop and you might even pick up some Christmas gifts – Pickering’s gin baubles are the perfect tree decoration for gin lovers!

Say cheese at 56 North
Fancy a savoury nibble as you sample a range of different Scottish gins?
Then head to Edinburgh gin bar 56 North which runs masterclasses in which they pair eight sample gins with cheeses.
It’s a thirst-quenching taste tour of Scotland, showing varying styles and the diverse nature of Scottish-made gin. All drinks are paired with both cheese and premium mixtures with the aim of developing the flavours.
Batch your own miniature
One Square’s Ginnasium tasting experience is a hands-on opportunity to learn more about your favourite tipple – and batch your very own miniature.
You’ll bottle your own little One Square gin from a barrel, add a wax seal and personalised label as a novel keepsake of your experience.
You’ll also learn the processes involved in gin distillation and be encourage you to indulge your senses as you get to know the botanicals and junipers that make gin so distinctive, each tasting experience is customised.
Or simply sit back and enjoy a gin in the bar - it boasts 105 different varieties, including its own One Square gin made by Pickering's at Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh.
Catch the gin bus!
It’s all aboard to combine two quintessentially British classics – gin and afternoon tea – while riding on a vintage red bus.
Indulge in gin pot-tails and a selection of cake stand treats as you are taken on a tour of the Scottish capital, passing by Scott Monument, Edinburgh Castle, Greyfriar’s Bobby, the Grassmarket, Arthur’s Seat, Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament.
