Summer in Edinburgh…it’s all about the Festival, the military tattoo and concerts on the castle esplanade, right? Well no, not really. These fantastic events might draw millions of visitors to the capital every year, but there’s so much more going on under the radar when the mercury rises.

From weird and wonderful walking tours to fantastic foodie feasts, Edinburgh really is a city that offers something for everyone. In fact, there’s so much happening over the coming weeks that you might not know where to start.

To help you out, here’s our insider’s guide to what’s hot this summer. 1 The Summer Sessions, Princes Street Gardens

Some of the biggest names in music – from the past and present - will take to the Ross Bandstand and perform against the backdrop of the historic castle on various dates throughout August. From Florence + The Machine and Lewis Capaldi to Primal Scream and Madness, this is a garden party with a difference and one not to be missed.

2 Blood and Guts: The Twists and Turns of Edinburgh’s Medical History

You’ve visited the castle, hopped on board the Royal Yacht Britannia and wandered down the Royal Mile…now for something a little bit different! Join the team from the Surgeons' Hall Museums on a walking tour taking in Edinburgh’s world-renowned medical history, form grave robbing to chloroform team parties. The guided tours take place on various dates until October…but it might not be one for the squeamish!

3 Edinburgh Festival of Cycling

Get on your bike and head to the capital for an 11-day celebration of two-wheeled transport from 6 to 16 June. Olympian Sir Chris Hoy learned his craft here in the city, but this great event will concentrate on so much more that the competitive side of the sport. The event, which takes place in venues across Edinburgh, aims to get people of all ages and abilities in the saddle.

4 Harvey Nichols Cocktail Masterclasses

This is an event sure to leave you shaken and stirred in one of Edinburgh’s most stylish destinations! It is perhaps better known for couture than cocktails, but Harvey Nics’ Fourth Floor bar will be hosting cocktail masterclasses on various dates this summer. Covering everything from martinis to British classics, you’re bound to get a taste for it. If cocktails aren’t your thing, then check out their wine masterclasses too. 


Do you remember spending hours as a child carefully crafting cars and houses out of LEGO® bricks? Well you won’t want to miss a world exclusive display at Edinburgh Zoo this summer. The venue will be playing host to over 30 life-sized sculptures made from over one million LEGO® bricks, including a killer whale, a hammerhead shark, and a giant squid.  

6 The Leith Festival

Although one of the most colourful and vibrant areas of the city, Leith doesn’t attract the tourist crowds of the Royal Mile or the New Town. But what better reason to go exploring this hub of creativity than The Leith Festival? The event, featuring arts, drama, music and exhibitions, takes place from 8 to 16 June, but you should definitely get there for the opening day when the annual gala and pageant takes place. It’s a fantastic celebration of the local community not to be missed!
